Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD, TMJ)

Temporomandibular Joint Disorders is a problem of discomfort in the jaw point. Jaw pain often come from Jaw muscles, Facial nerves and The temporomandibular joint (TMJ)

  • Pain or Discomfort in the muscles of jaw area.
  • Internal unbalance of the joint involves a displaced disc, dislocated jaw, or injury to the condyle.
  • A group of chronic/unhealthy joint disorders that can affect the temporomandibular joint.



TMJ disorder it shows several common symptoms like

  • Unable to open mouth widely
  • Pain in jaw area, shoulder and neck, around the area of ear when you speak or chew
  • Jaw get stuck while open or closed mouth
  • Toothache, Neck ache and Headache
  • Feeling tired in the face
  • Discomfort in chewing and speaking
What causes TMJ/TMD ?

Exact causes of TMJ/TMD are currently unknown. Dentist believe this problems occurred with the muscles of jaw or parts of jaw area.

Self-Care Practices
    There are Self-Care Practices will helpful to reduce the discomfort of TMJ/TMD
  • Eating soft foods,
  • Applying ice packs
  • Avoiding extreme jaw movements
  • Relaxing and reducing stress
  • Practicing gentle jaw stretching and relaxing exercises that may help increase jaw movement. A physical therapist can recommend exercises if appropriate for your particular condition

 Medium cases treatments like
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation
  • Ultrasound
  • Radio wave therapy
  • Trigger-point injections
 More intense cases require surgery
  • Arthrocentesis
  •   Arthroscopy
  • Open-joint surgery
